Research Center on Antigypsyism Romani Rose-Fellowship

The research fellowship sponsored by the Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation supports outstanding academics from the countries of the European Union who are conducting research on the topic of antigypsyism.

The research fellowship has been awarded annually since its establishment in October 2019 with a funding amount of 20,000 euros and honours the decades-long commitment of Romani Rose, Chairman of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma, to human and civil rights. The funding is linked to a stay at the Antigypsyism Research Center at Ruperto Carola. Visiting academics from different disciplines should benefit from the on-site network, in particular from the exchange with other researchers. A large proportion of the annual applications come from other European countries. The fellowship thus increases the international visibility of our institution and serves to network our researchers across Europe.

Tender modalities

The fellowship is offered annually in two variants:

  • Doctoral students receive a twelve-month grant of 1,666 euros per month to prepare, write or complete their doctorate.
  • Postdoctoral researchers who wish to sharpen their academic profile after completing their doctorate can apply for an eight-month fellowship totalling 2,500 euros per month.

Funding is available for projects and research projects related to antigypsyism research or a related field such as racism research. A commission of the research center selects a scholarship holder each year.

Applications for the year 2025 can be submitted until 30 September 2024.

The call for applications for 2026 is expected to be published in summer 2025.

As dealing with the topic of antiziganism requires a high level of sensitivity, the RCA considers dialogue with those affected to be an integral part of its academic practice. For this reason, applications from qualified young researchers from the Sinti and Roma communities are particularly welcome.
