With a focus on antigypsyism in Romania and Germany, the discussion moderated by Dr. Iulius Rostas will center on how film can serve as a platform for marginalized voices and foster greater understanding. The panelists, Izabela Tiberiade (activist), Alina Voinea (contact person for Antigypsyism in the state of Berlin), Radu Ciorniciuc (director Acasă, My Home), and Liviu Bărbulescu (director The Life and Miracles of Saint Nicodemus of Tismana) will share their experience as well as insights on the challenges and opportunities in using film as a tool for advocacy, awareness, and social change.

Speakers

Izabela Tiberiade is a human rights educator and researcher, born in a traditional Romani community in Craiova, Romania, and a graduate of the University of Malmö, where she studied human rights and international law. 

Alina Voinea is the contact person for antigypsyism in the state of Berlin. As a cultural scientist, she has worked in political youth and adult education as well as migration counselling. 

Radu Ciorniciuc is a Romanian filmmaker, cinematographer, and investigative journalist. Radu’s debut feature documentary film, ACASA, MY HOME, won the Best Cinematography Award at Sundance 2020 and was nominated for a European Film Academy Award. 

Liviu Bărbulescu is a graphic designer and animator specializing in video explainers. His first short film, The Life and Miracles of Saint Nicodemus of Tismana, was selected for Amaro Kino, a traveling short film showcase organized by ERIAC in partnership with the EEFFN.

Dr. Iulius Rostas (moderator) is Visiting Professor at the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration in Bucharest. He founded the Romani Studies Program at the CEU and served as its chair from 2016 to 2019.

The event takes place in the framework of the RO-MANIA Film Festival at Kino Babylon in Berlin and is organized by the Critical Film & Image Hub at the Research Centre on Antigypsyism in cooperation with the association Sozialfabrik. The event is supported by the „Live Democracy!“ Programm of the Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, and the „Jekhipe“ project funded by the European Union.
