IHRA Recommendations Teaching and Learning About the Nazi Persecution of the Roma
February 26, 2026
The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) has published recommendations for Teaching and Learning about the Persecution and Genocide of the Roma during the Nazi Era. Our colleague Dr. Karola Fings played a key role in developing these recommendations as a member of the German delegation to the IHRA.
By publishing these recommendations, the IHRA aims to establish a solid foundation to help states integrate the history of the persecution of Sinti and Roma into general research, remembrance, and education. These recommendations are intended to support not only policymakers but also educators and practitioners in their efforts.
The IHRA is an intergovernmental organization that promotes the education, research, and remembrance of the Holocaust worldwide. Its member states, in collaboration with Roma organizations and international experts from the fields of education, museums, and memorial sites, developed new recommendations for teaching about the Roma genocide. Our project director, Dr. Karola Fings, played a leading role in the development of the recommendations as the principal author.
The recommendations address key educational questions in three main chapters: Why, what, and how should the persecution of the Sinti and Roma and the genocide committed against them be taught?
