Lisa Smith, Filmemacherin und wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Critical Film & Image Hub der Forschungsstelle Antiziganismus, ist beim ARTE-Filmabend und Kurzfilmprogramm „Zoom: Filme von Roma und Romnja” dabei. In der ARTE-Doku denkt sie über ihre eigene Filmkunst nach, die die Sichtweisen von Roma und Sinti in den Vordergrund stellt, gängige Filmgeschichten hinterfragt und sich aktiv gegen die Verbreitung von antiziganistischen Klischees in der visuellen Kultur wehrt.
Ausgehend von ihrer akademischen Forschung und ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit betont sie die Bedeutung der Selbstdarstellung und Autorschaft innerhalb der Roma- und Sinti-Gemeinschaften. Sie sieht den Film als ein wichtiges Medium, um Handlungsfähigkeit zurückzugewinnen und komplexe, nuancierte Erfahrungen auszudrücken, die in den Mainstream-Medien historisch zum Schweigen gebracht oder falsch dargestellt wurden.
Neben der Reflexion über ihre persönliche Praxis hebt sie das vielfältige und dynamische Feld der zeitgenössischen Roma-Filmemachenden hervor und betont die Bandbreite der Ästhetik, Themen und Stimmen, die in ganz Europa entstehen. Sie kritisiert die strukturellen Ungleichheiten, die in der Filmindustrie und der Filmausbildung verankert sind, und beleuchtet die anhaltenden Hindernisse, mit denen Roma- und Sinti-Künstler*innen konfrontiert sind, vom begrenzten Zugang zu Finanzmitteln und Ausbildung bis hin zum Ausschluss aus kuratorischen und institutionellen Räumen.
Durch ihre kuratorische und kreative Arbeit setzt sich Lisa Smith für einen grundlegenden Wandel in der Art und Weise ein, wie Roma-Erzählungen entwickelt, unterstützt und verbreitet werden, weg von ausbeuterischen oder eindimensionalen Darstellungen und hin zu kollaborativen, in der Gemeinschaft verwurzelten Ansätzen des Geschichtenerzählens.

(1): Zoom: Films by Roma and Romnja. Stereotypical images and perceptions of Roma and Romnja are deeply rooted in Western narrative. How is it possible to establish narratives from within the community, produce films and make them accessible to a large audience, taking the invisibility of Europe's largest minority seriously and making it truly tangible? ‘Only through a paradigm shift – by insisting on agency and presence – can we begin to redefine how we are perceived and understood,’ says Timea Junghaus, director of the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC).
Who is responsible for distributing the films and stories? How much activism is needed to bring about lasting change to old narratives and achieve more freedom for everyone? Highlighting and overcoming structural problems, especially in connection with public institutions such as film archives and film funding, play an important role in raising awareness. (2): Chavo short film by Alecio Araci, Sweden 2023, 15 min. Tommy's Grill is a meeting place for the Roma community. Here, a close-knit but diverse group meets to eat and talk. When a young Roma man visits the restaurant one evening, rumours arise and Tommy is forced to confront his traumatic memories. Not only the loss of his son, but also his handling of his son's homosexuality weigh heavily on him. Chavo is a courageous and moving story of loss and remorse.
Chavo won the award for best short film at the Ake Dikhea? International Roma Film Festival in Berlin in 2023. Alecio Araci is a filmmaker who lives and works on the west coast of Sweden. With a background in DIY and underground culture, he has been involved in numerous low- and high-budget projects over the past 15 years. Between 2015 and 2018, he completed a bachelor's degree in film directing at the HDK-Valand University of Art and Design in Gothenburg and has since continued his creative work both in front of and behind the camera.
(3): Fünfzehn Minuten short film by Sejad Ademaj, Germany 2022, 13 min. As Jasmina is doing her homework after dinner with her parents, her boyfriend Lukas calls and tries to persuade her to come outside. While the two are still on the phone, the doorbell rings. Instead of Lukas, it is the police. They inform Jasmina and her parents that they will be deported within 15 minutes. Jasmina's world collapses. In her despair, Jasmina calls Lukas, who wants to help with the support of his mother, who is a lawyer. (Text: arte)
